China’s defence ministry blasts Pentagon’s annual report

The Chinese defense ministry has strongly criticized the U.S. Defense Department’s yearly report on China, asserting that it misrepresents the country’s security policies and military strategies.

According to the Pentagon’s report submitted to the U.S. Congress, China’s long-term aspirations involve the swift modernization, diversification, and enlargement of its nuclear capabilities over the next decade. This report outlines China’s national goals, encompassing its defense policies and military strategies.

According to the Pentagon, China currently possesses over 500 nuclear warheads and is expected to increase this number to more than 1,000 warheads by the year 2030. The report also indicates that China intends to utilize new fast-breeder reactors and reprocessing facilities to generate plutonium for its nuclear arsenal, despite publicly stating that these technologies are for peaceful purposes.

In response to the report, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian issued a statement expressing strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition. He stated that the report exaggerates and sensationalizes a supposed “Chinese military threat” that does not exist.

In 2022, the Pentagon reported that China had intensified its diplomatic, political, and military pressure on Taiwan.

During a media briefing on Wednesday, a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office criticized the U.S. report on China’s military power, stating that it contained numerous inaccuracies, including its comments on the Taiwan issue.

Emphasizing the significance of the military-to-military relationship in Sino-U.S. relations, Wu, from the Defense Ministry, mentioned that they maintain open and effective communication with the United States through military diplomacy. However, he also pointed out that the difficulties and obstacles in the relations between the two military forces are primarily the result of actions taken by the United States.

Wu argued that the United States appears to act in a contradictory manner, pretending to be perplexed while engaging in actions that undermine China’s security interests, all the while professing a desire to manage crises and enhance communication.

This exchange between the two nations occurs shortly before China hosts foreign defense officials at the 10th Xiangshan Forum in Beijing, scheduled for October 29 to 31. The United States accepted China’s invitation to the forum after China had declined a meeting between the defense chiefs of the two countries a few months earlier.
