This policy explains what personal data Defence Street collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, how long we keep it and what you can ask us to do with it. It applies to this website and to the emails we send. Defence Street is operated by the publisher identified on our contact page, which acts as the data fiduciary for the personal data described here.
We have written this policy to sit alongside the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the rules made under it, and to be understandable to readers outside India as well. It is a description of our practice, not legal advice, and it does not create rights beyond those the applicable law gives you.
What we collect
- Account details. If you register, we store your name, email address, a hashed password and, where you supply them, your company, role and phone number.
- Enquiry form contents. When you send an enquiry to a listed company, we store your name, contact details, the company or product you enquired about and the message you wrote.
- Listing submissions. If you submit or claim a company listing, we store the company information you supply and the details of the person submitting it, so that we can verify the claim.
- Newsletter subscriptions. Your email address, the date you subscribed and whether the message was opened or a link was clicked.
- Contact, review and comment content. Anything you choose to write to us or to post on the site.
- Server logs. Your IP address, browser and device type, referring page, requested address and timestamp, recorded automatically.
- Cookies and analytics. Identifiers used to keep you signed in, remember your comparison tray, protect forms against abuse and measure how pages are used.
We do not ask for financial account details, government identity numbers, or any classified or export controlled information. Please do not send such material through this site.
Why we use it, and on what basis
We use personal data to operate the directory: to create and secure accounts, to pass your enquiry to the company you selected, to publish and moderate listings and comments, to send the newsletter you asked for, to keep the site available and defend it against abuse, and to understand in aggregate which sections are used.
Where the law requires your consent, we rely on the consent you give when you register, submit an enquiry, subscribe or accept non-essential cookies, and you may withdraw it at any time. Otherwise we rely on the need to provide the service you asked for, on our legitimate interest in keeping the site secure, or on a legal obligation. Withdrawing consent does not affect anything done before you withdrew it, and it may mean we can no longer provide part of the service.
Who we share it with
- The listed company you contact. An enquiry is sent to that company so it can reply to you. Once it is with them, their own privacy practices apply and we do not control what they do with it.
- Service providers. Our hosting provider, email delivery provider and analytics provider process data on our instructions, under contract, and only to provide those services.
- Advertisers and sponsors. We report audience figures in aggregate only. We do not sell or rent your personal data, and we do not pass contact details to advertisers unless you submit them through a clearly labelled form.
- Authorities. Where we are required to disclose information by law, or where disclosure is necessary to establish or defend a legal claim.
Some providers may store or process data outside India. Where that happens we use providers that offer appropriate contractual and security safeguards and that operate within the transfer restrictions applicable at the time.
How long we keep it
Account data is kept while the account is open and for a reasonable period afterwards, so that the account can be restored or a dispute resolved. Enquiries and their replies are kept while they remain useful as a record of the exchange, and are then deleted or reduced to anonymous statistics. Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. Server logs are kept for a short period for security and troubleshooting. Published listings, reviews and comments remain until removed by you, by the company concerned or by us.
Your rights
You may ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to correct anything inaccurate or out of date, to delete data we no longer need, to stop sending you marketing email, and to know in general terms who your data has been shared with. Where the applicable law allows, you may also nominate another person to exercise these rights on your behalf.
To make a request, write to us through the contact page with enough detail for us to find your records. We may need to confirm who you are before we act, and we answer within the period the applicable law allows. Every marketing email also carries an unsubscribe link that works without contacting us. If you are not satisfied with how we have handled a request, you may raise the matter with the relevant data protection authority.
Cookies
Essential cookies keep you signed in, hold your comparison selections and protect forms against automated abuse, and the site cannot work properly without them. Analytics cookies, where enabled, tell us in aggregate which pages are read and how visitors arrive, and are used to improve the directory rather than to profile individuals. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though blocking essential cookies will break signing in.
Children
The site is intended for professional and research use and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from a child, and where the applicable law requires verifiable parental consent below the age it specifies, we do not process that data without it. If you believe a child has given us personal data, tell us and we will delete it.
Security, changes and contact
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data, including encrypted connections, hashed passwords, restricted administrative access and regular updates. No online service can promise perfect security, and you are responsible for keeping your password confidential.
We may update this policy as the site or the law changes. The current version is always published on this page, and where a change materially affects how we use your data we will give notice before it takes effect. For any privacy question, request or complaint, write to us through the contact page and mark your message as a privacy request.
